D4 Intelligent Item Quirks

D4 Intelligent Item quirks

Intelligent items, if not thought through, can come across as flat. Roll on the table for a unique trait that may make them more flavorful as an NPC.

1. Obsessed with its Ex. The items doesn’t let a day go by without informing the character that its last owner was way better/stronger/smarter. They even hold it wrong compared to the Ex.

2. Disgusted. The item is appalled that people need to eat, drink, and sleep. It finds the act disgusting and lets the hero know it every time.

3. Suicidal. The item is very very old and seeks death. Will encourage the heroes to take any action that will lead to its personal destruction.

4. Story time. The item will cause a ruckus and prevent rest unless it is told a bedtime story. It was not enchanted to know how to read and really loves stories.

A pirate captain that is a polymorphed dragon.

A pirate captain that is a full-sized dragon with a tricorn hat and a Staff of Curses for a peg leg. Their ship is enormous, with a cabin sized for a dragon, but the rigging and gun decks, as well as the crew’s quarters, are on a much smaller scale. It takes over a hundred pirates to operate such a huge craft, but Captain Ryrviog is so renowned they have little trouble finding new recruits.

Have a chart I developed for visualizing the disposition of your character! This is partly inspired by a chart I saw of Aristotle’s Golden Mean, which is a system he had for developing good character, but of course, this is more about gauging a character’s traits than bringing them into any kind of balance.

For a printable PDF version of the chart please follow this link.

@probablybadrpgideas Replace the alignment chart with this in all games. Be strict about players sticking to it.

Nothing weird to say this time, just throwing in my 2 cents that this might be more useful if the scale was 1-20 instead of 1-25. Nothing major, just lets you roll for them if you want to.

Just for you:

D4 Prisoners

It happens all too often. Your ‘heroes’ do something incredibly silly and end up in prison. Now you could just throw them in an empty cell but that would be boring. Roll on the table to see who they are sharing a cell with.

1) Quinn the Mad: This wizard was attempting to create a potion of mass polymorph when it exploded turning himself and a few other hapless victims into random animals. He is currently locked in a birdcage in the heroes cell. He will reward them with magic items if they aid his escape.

2) Kylar: This street urchin was caught stealing bread and was nearly beaten to death by the constable. He is presently dying when the heroes are thrown into the cell with him. The jailor doesn’t care about the state of the boy. If saved will look up to the heroes and will aid them with whatever they need.

3) Grandmother Helga: This lovely old grandmother is knitting a sweater for her granddaughter when the heroes are thrown into a cell with her. She is imprisoned for lighting her son-in-law on fire after breaking her granddaughter’s leg. She is going to be hung in the morning for murder and needs help relocating her daughter and granddaughter to a neighboring village where the rest of her family is, and also to deliver the sweater she’s finishing up.

4) Demon: There is a well dressed middle aged woman reclining on a beautiful mahogany chair when the heroes are thrown into their cell with her. The jailers don’t acknowledge her since they can’t see her. She explains that she can help the heroes escape the prison if they can help her with a little problem. She needs a priest killed who defaulted on a loan (a lie, he is an exorcist and she needs to get rid of him). If the heroes agree they are teleported out of the prison and are under the effects of a Geas spell to kill the priest.

More Shitty Magic Items:

Another horde of magical miscellany that misses the mark.

  1. Halfling Belt: the wearer of this belt is granted the greater dexterity of a halfling, as well as their size; adds +2 to Dex and shrinks the wearer to the average size of a halfling.
  2. Pendant of Perception: this iridescent pendant allows the user to change their appearance at will, however, they are the only one able to perceive the change.
  3. Miracle Blade: a longsword that does 2 extra d8/d10 of damage, but has -10 to hit.
  4. Cinder Cloak: this flame-colored cloak engulfs the wearer in flames, over which they have full control, but does not offer any protection from said flames.
  5. Endless Ladder: a ladder that can be folded to fit into any bag, and unfolded to span any distance. However, anyone climbing the ladder will not reach their destination, but will be climbing the ladder endlessly.
  6. Trick Rope: a favorite of con men, this rope can become any length desired by the user, and any knots tied into it will easily come undone.
  7. Clutch Purse: a small bag that will tightly hold anything put into it; a poor place to put money, as it will not be coming back out of the bag easily.
  8. Malaprop Mixture: this potion causes the drinker to mix up their words for an indeterminate amount of time; confusing during conversation, potentially catastrophic during verbal spellcasting.
  9. Boots of Spiderkind: this pair of boots magically gives the wearer extra pairs of legs for a total of 8, giving an arachnid-like appearance.
  10. Detective’s Coat: a battered old longcoat that reeks of alcohol and ash; gives the wearer +1 to Investigation and Perception, and an inability to form healthy romantic relationships.

Magic Item: Soul Snap

This is the first of a couple items I have floating around in my head inspired by (but not ripping off) Netflix’s Castlevania.

The Soul Snap is a whip that deals extra magical damage whenever you make an attack based on your alignment and skill level. For example, if you’re Good, it deals extra Radiant damage. How much extra damage it does is determined by your proficiency bonus so it scales well with your character.

It’s length is magically variable as well so you get a reach of 20ft with it.
